About John Steinbeck

“For the last 33 years, my public service has been defined by a commitment to protecting our community and helping those in need. Now, I’m excited to continue that mission in a different capacity. As a Nevada State Senator, I pledge to be a champion for public safety and workforce development, ensuring that our community thrives and remains a safe and prosperous place for all.”

John Steinbeck began his career with the Clark County Fire Department in 1990 and was promoted to fire chief in 2020. He has served at every level of the Fire Department, including as a firefighter, engineer, captain, battalion chief, and deputy fire chief.

Steinbeck has extensive experience in every aspect of emergency preparedness, response, and recovery. During his time at the Clark County Fire Department, he also served as the emergency manager for Clark County, overseeing the collaboration and integration of all public safety agencies and partners in southern Nevada for prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery activities for emergencies.

Following the tragic shooting on October 1, 2017, at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival, Steinbeck coordinated the establishment of the Family Assistance Center and the Vegas Strong Resiliency Center to support survivors. Following the mass shooting, he was instrumental in coordinating a transformation of statewide emergency management and homeland security initiatives and policies in order to help protect Nevada’s communities going forward.

Steinbeck was also deployed to aid in Search and Rescue missions after September 11, 2001, and in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He continues to serve as a Task Force Leader for the FEMA Search and Rescue team as well as a board member for Nevada Child Seekers and the American Red Cross.
